Journal. 1868-1891.

Members of the Second Order Church Family/Center Family at Mount Lebanon, New York, kept what eventually turned out to be this 500-page journal that offered a very complete picture of the activities of the members of the families from the routine to the extraordinary, 1868-1891. The manuscript includes references to the hiring of outsiders to perform work, Shaker philanthropy, carpentry and renovations made to buildings and dwellings, the acceptance of children, making wine, doctoring residents of other Shaker villages, changes in leadership and work assignments, and arrivals of new members. In addition, the journal writers documented the Shaker seed business at Mount Lebanon, medical extract production, harvesting, plumbing problems, and work in the machine, herb, shoe, and tailor's shops. Also, for nearly every year, there are "recapitulations," summarizing the comings and goings of residents and production levels in various Shaker industries.
